Schengen Border Queues May Grow As EU Biometric Rule Changes

Travelers leaving or entering the Schengen area could face longer border queues this autumn. A summer flexibility period for EU biometric border checks ends on September 7th. Non-EU short-term visitors must register their biometric data under the Entry Exit System. This rule applies across Schengen member states.

The system was launched in October 2025. It became officially operational in April 2026. However, technical problems caused long delays at several European airports. EU countries were allowed to pause checks during the summer travel peak. That pause option expires on Monday, September 7th.

Media reports suggest border queues will grow immediately after September 7th. European Commission officials indicate some flexibility may still continue for certain countries.
