Expensive electric cars in Denmark may cost more from 2027

Buying a high-end electric car in Denmark may soon cost more. The government plans to end a tax discount from 2027. This change affects electric cars costing over 366,000 Danish kroner. Four ministers shared the proposal with Berlingske.

Electric cars currently pay lower registration taxes than fuel cars. A tax increase was set for January 2026. Politicians previously delayed that increase by one year. Without another extension, higher taxes will start in 2027.

The extra tax money will help fund other public plans. These plans include free dental care and lower personal taxes. The money will also support agricultural reforms.

An expert group is currently reviewing car tax rules. They are exploring models to remove registration tax on electric cars permanently. Their final recommendations will come in the second half of 2026.

Local industry groups strongly criticized the government proposal. The Confederation of Danish Industry called the plan an own goal. Car association FDM calculated specific tax increases for popular models. A Tesla Model Y Long Range could cost nearly 28,000 Danish kroner more. A VW ID.4 Style could face a tax increase of about 10,300 Danish kroner. Mobility Denmark also warned against making green cars more expensive.
