Copenhagen District Moves Closer to Petrol Car Ban

Driving a petrol car in Copenhagen may soon become harder.

A committee at Copenhagen Municipality approved a new zero-emission zone plan on Monday afternoon.

The proposed zone will cover parts of Inner Vesterbro.

Petrol and diesel vehicles would generally be banned from driving there.

The revised plan includes major exemptions after 768 residents and businesses gave feedback.

About 80 percent of responses expressed criticism or concern.

City officials then exempted several busy streets.

Vesterbrogade, Skelbækgade, and part of Halmtorvet remain exempt.

The area around Copenhagen Central Station will also remain open.

Vesterbro residents with nearby parking permits can apply for driving exemptions inside the zone.

Kristine Ammitzbøll-Bille from De Radikale welcomed the decision.

She told TV 2 Kosmopol that the zone helps the climate and reduces air pollution.

The proposal now needs approval from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency.

It will then go to Copenhagen City Council for a final vote.

The city council will vote on the proposal by the end of 2026.
