Lidl Offers Denmark's Cheapest Organic Basket, Analysis Finds

Lidl offers Denmark's cheapest basket of organic groceries, according to price-monitoring service Madprisluppen. Buying organic food at Lidl can help Copenhagen residents save money on daily grocery shopping.

Madprisluppen recorded prices across seven Danish supermarket chains between October 9 and October 12. A basket with 22 organic items cost 355.20 Danish kroner at Lidl. Meny was the most expensive store, where the same basket cost 449.60 Danish kroner. Lidl was 26 percent cheaper than Meny.

Rema 1000 was the second-cheapest supermarket. Its basket cost only 5 Danish kroner more than Lidl's. SuperBrugsen was the second-most expensive chain, costing almost 35 Danish kroner less than Meny. The study also checked Netto, 365discount, and Føtex.

The tested basket included milk, eggs, vegetables, and dry goods. Meat was excluded because comparable items were hard to find across chains. Peer Sandtner is purchasing director at Lidl Denmark. He said lower prices help people buy organic food every day.

Madprisluppen noted that Danish stores carry fewer organic items than six years ago. Organic prices have increased over time. Organic items also appear in special discount offers less often than regular groceries.
