GPS Interference Hits Baltic Flights and Ferries Near Bornholm

Denmark recorded unprecedented GPS signal interference near the island of Bornholm in 2026. Maritime captains report multi-hour satellite blackouts in the area. Commercial vessels and flights must rely on manual navigation methods.
A Danish monitoring station on Bornholm logged 30 signal disruptions so far in 2026. That compares with 16 total cases in 2025 and 11 in 2024. Danish public broadcaster DR reported these record numbers.
Experts say there are reasonable grounds to suspect Russia for the disruptions. Researcher Søren Reime Larsen noted GPS is widely used in military technology. He said entities distort signals to defend against drones and missiles. The measuring instruments cannot pinpoint the exact source of interference.
