/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /Electric bicycle riders in Denmark may soon need to wear helmets by law. This change could affect many daily commuters and students across Copenhagen.
The political party Moderaterne proposed the new safety rule. Health spokesperson Sten Larsen called for stricter rules for e-bikes. He spoke to the regional broadcaster TV2 Østjylland about the plan. Larsen noted that e-bikes are heavier and faster than regular bikes.
Currently, Denmark does not require helmets for standard e-bikes. Standard e-bikes provide motor assistance up to 25 kilometers per hour. Helmets are already mandatory for faster speed pedelecs up to 45 kilometers per hour.
The proposal follows a sharp rise in serious traffic accidents. According to the Danish Road Directorate, 200 e-bike riders were injured in 2025. Among those victims, 133 people suffered serious injuries and 11 died. The number of serious injuries reached a six-year high.
Larsen wants to discuss the proposal with Transport Minister Signe Munk. Munk belongs to the Socialist People's Party, Socialistisk Folkeparti. Her ministry stated that Munk was unavailable for comment to news agency Ritzau.
The Danish Cyclists' Federation opposes mandatory helmet laws for e-bikes. Federation chair Jens Peter Hansen said mandatory rules might discourage cycling. He emphasized that the group warmly recommends helmet use voluntarily. The proposal remains under political discussion.
