/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /Expect major traffic delays in central Copenhagen this Wednesday. About 10,000 students plan to march against proposed student grant cuts. The protest starts at City Hall Square, Rådhuspladsen, at 12:30 p.m. Demonstration participants will march to Christiansborg Palace Square.
An upper secondary student group expects 30,000 students to walk out of classes. The Danish government wants to cut public student grants, known as SU. Students living at home would lose SU if parents earn over 710,077 Danish kroner. Grants would drop for parental incomes between 419,589 and 710,077 Danish kroner.
Another proposal tightens graduate unemployment benefits. Graduates must work 18 of their final 24 study months to qualify. Savings would help fund increased military spending in the proposed budget.
Student organization chairman Oscar Tønsberg Hoffmann criticized the plans. He called the proposed cuts hostile to education. Copenhagen Police will monitor the march to limit traffic disruption. Chief Police Inspector Peter Dahl stated officers will protect demonstration rights. This report is based on coverage by CPH Post.
