Venomous Fish Numbers Rise in Danish Waters

The population of the lesser weever fish is growing in Danish waters. This fish is locally known as fjæsing. Recent monitoring shows a clear increase in their numbers across Denmark. They thrive in coastal marine areas during warm summer months.

In Copenhagen, this affects popular swimming spots like Amager Strandpark and Bellevue. The fish likes shallow water with sandy seabeds. It buries itself in the sand to hide. Only its sharp dorsal fins stick out above the sand. Swimmers can easily step on them while walking in the sea.

The fins carry a painful venom. A sting causes strong pain, swelling, and burning feelings. If you get stung, act quickly to stop the pain. Place your foot in hot water immediately. The water should be around 45 degrees Celsius. Heat breaks down the fish venom fast.
