/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /Tencent has connected a renewable energy microgrid to its Huailai Dongyuan data center. This project is China's first data center microgrid combining wind, solar, and storage. It helps address surging global power demand from artificial intelligence data centers. The International Energy Agency expects data center power use to double by 2026. That demand could reach over 1,000 TWh, matching Japan's annual electricity consumption.
The Huailai Dongyuan site uses three distinct operating modes to maximize clean power. First, solar panels cover daytime needs, with 95 percent consumed directly on site. Second, batteries store excess daytime solar power and cheap off-peak grid energy. This peak shaving method lowers daily electricity bills by five percent. Third, wind turbines complement solar generation to supply power day and night. An intelligent management platform shifts non-critical loads to match energy generation.
Tencent developed a dedicated Energy Management System to manage grid operations safely. The system uses weather forecasts and historical data to optimize energy storage strategy. The Huailai Dongyuan microgrid generates 14 million kWh of electricity each year. Green energy now powers over 70 percent of Tencent's self-built large data centers. Overall, Tencent can store 66 MW of renewable energy across all facility sites. These green power installations generate 70 million kWh annually for company facilities. That total output can power about 25,000 households for a full year. Source: Tencent.
