US, Denmark, and Greenland Sign Arctic Defense Deal

Denmark, Greenland, and the United States signed a new defense agreement in New York. The deal places Greenland security under the NATO framework. It gives the US military expanded operational access across the island. The agreement limits access for countries outside NATO and the European Union.

Under the ten-page pact, the United States will build two new military bases. These will be in southern Narsarsuaq and eastern Mestersvig. The US already operates the Pituffik base in the north. The deal also confirms Danish sovereignty and Greenland's self-determination rights.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen welcomed the agreement. She said it brings stability during uncertain times. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen called the pact a positive step. He noted that rebuilding trust at home will take time.

The agreement blocks non-NATO and non-EU entities from sensitive strategic sectors. It aims to restrict defense influence from nations like China and Russia. EU leaders officially supported the new defense arrangement. The rules remain binding even if Greenland gains independence.
