Tractor Protests Disrupt Traffic in Central Copenhagen

Tractor protests caused traffic delays in central Copenhagen on Tuesday morning. Drivers faced disruptions along a three-kilometer procession route.

Around 300 tractors entered the capital to protest a proposed fertiliser law. Protesters gathered outside the Danish parliament at Christiansborg and near Kongens Nytorv. Police expected traffic disruptions to last until 1 PM. Another 35 tractors demonstrated in Aarhus without incident.

Parliament is debating a law from the green tripartite agreement. The bill aims to limit nitrogen discharge from farms into oceans. Nitrogen causes low oxygen levels in waterways and harms marine wildlife.

Farmers and dairy workers oppose the new limits. They claim the rules will cause massive income losses. Farmers argue that municipal wastewater causes more algae blooms than agriculture. However, nature conservation groups say agriculture produces 90 percent of nitrogen pollution. Lawmakers will hold a final vote on Thursday. (Source: The Local)
