Stena Line Orders Two Chinese-Built Hybrid Ferries for Sweden-Denmark Route

Travel between Sweden and Denmark will soon become greener with new hybrid ferries. Ferry operator Stena Line ordered two new hybrid vessels from a Chinese shipyard. The ships will serve the popular Gothenburg–Frederikshavn route starting in 2030. They will connect Sweden and Denmark with battery-hybrid technology.

On September 23, 2026, Stena Line placed the order with China Merchants Industry. The vessels will be built at the Weihai Shipyard in China. These E-Flexer RoPax ferries can carry up to 1,500 passengers each. They also offer 2,750 lane meters for freight transport.

The ships use conventional fuel combined with battery power. They are also designed for future 100 percent electric operation.
