Wild mushrooms are currently sprouting across Denmark. Many wild fungi are toxic to dogs and can damage their nervous system, liver, or kidneys. If your dog eats an unknown mushroom, contact a vet immediately. Take photos of the mushroom if possible. During emergency hours, search online for an akut dyrlæge or dyrlægevagt.
Fallen horse chestnuts and acorns also pose severe poisoning risks. Horse chestnuts contain aesculin, which causes salivation, vomiting, or paralysis. Acorns contain tannins that damage the stomach, liver, and kidneys. Do not let dogs play with chestnuts or acorns.
Rotting fruit on paths and in parks can cause alcohol poisoning in dogs. Stone fruit pits like plum or cherry cores contain toxic cyanide. Rotting fruit also attracts bees, wasps, snails, and slugs. Insect stings can block airways. Snails may carry lungworm parasites. Keep dogs on leads and bring safe toys from home.
