/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /Public sector debt in Denmark has fallen sharply for individual residents. You can check your debt through the Mit gældsoverblik self-service portal. About 687,000 people now owe money to Danish public authorities. This number was over 1.1 million in 2023.
The Danish Debt Collection Agency reported a drop of 454,000 people. Public debt includes money owed to police, municipalities, or tax authorities. Agency deputy director Søren Bork Hansen explained the main reasons. Many residents logged into the portal and paid their debts directly.
The agency also wrote off small debts below a few thousand Danish kroner. This applies if collection attempts lasted for at least one full year. In those cases, collection costs exceed the debt amount itself. Authorities also recover debt through tax refunds or direct salary deductions.
Total debt owed by residents reached 108 billion Danish kroner in June 2025. The grand total reached 164 billion Danish kroner in June 2026. This total includes businesses, missing persons, and people living abroad.
About 690,000 people cleared their debts completely since 2023. Meanwhile, other residents took on new debt during the same period. In the second quarter of 2026, 110,000 people became fully debt-free. Another 62,000 people incurred new public debt in that same quarter. This story was reported by CPH Post.
