/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /Hans Tavsens Park in Nørrebro is undergoing major redevelopment until spring 2028. Archaeologists have unearthed over 1,000 historic graves beneath the park grounds. The discovery offers a rare look into Copenhagen's past and urban development.
The site sits right next to Assistens Cemetery in Nørrebro. Historically, the land served as a burial ground for poor residents. It also holds victims of the 1853 Copenhagen cholera epidemic. Archaeologist Olivia Persson from the Museum of Copenhagen shared details with Danish broadcaster DR. She explained that the finds help researchers understand the city's poorest historical residents.
The ongoing excavation comes ahead of a major urban green transformation. The city is connecting Hans Tavsens Park with Hans Tavsens Gade. This new green space will collect extreme rainwater during heavy cloudbursts. It aims to prevent flooded roads and basements during wetter Danish weather. Work began in autumn 2025 and will conclude in spring 2028.
Most human remains will move to the University of Copenhagen. The Anthropological Laboratory will store and study selected skeletons. Researchers plan to analyze health conditions and historic burial customs. Remaining bones will be reburied in the park, as reported by CPH Post.
