/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /The European Union and Canada are building a new strategic alliance. It will create new chances to live, study, and work across the Atlantic. The agreement comes from a two-day summit in Montreal. Leaders aim to build a shared space for economic security.
The plan focuses on young people, researchers, and skilled workers. Both sides want deeper Canadian participation in the Erasmus+ education program. They will also work on recognizing professional qualifications across borders. A new Youth Mobility Partnership will make travel and work easier.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke at the summit. EU Council President António Costa and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney joined her. Von der Leyen suggested Canada could become an EU associate member. However, countries like Germany, France, and Italy objected to that status.
Both sides face economic pressure from recent US trade tariffs. Donald Trump has also made threats regarding Canada and Greenland. Greenland is part of Denmark but not in the EU. The Local reported these developments from the draft summit statement.
