Up to 200,000 current and former users could be affected by the breach.
This includes students, staff, guests, and university partners since 2003.
The university announced the breach in a press statement on Friday.
Hackers used compromised user profiles to enter the DTUBasen system.
A large amount of personal data was downloaded from the database.
The stolen information may include full names and Danish CPR identity numbers.
For active users, addresses, pictures, and phone numbers might also be leaked.
DTU apologized for the uncertainty caused by the security incident.
The university is working with authorities to limit damage and inform victims.
It cannot yet confirm exact victim numbers or who launched the attack.
The leaked data could make fake emails and calls look very real.
DTU advises users to watch for suspicious messages and protect passwords.
Users can set up a credit warning on Borger.dk using their CPR number.
