Denmark to set age limit of 55 for men in public fertility care

Men in Denmark will soon face an age limit for public fertility treatment. Starting January 1, 2027, men must receive a referral before turning 55. Once a man turns 56, all ongoing treatment will stop. This new rule applies to public fertility clinics across Danish regions.

Danish Regions made this decision based on health evaluations. Research shows older fathers increase the risk of pregnancy complications. Higher paternal age is also linked to health issues in children. Male sperm quality drops as age increases over time. Lower sperm quality makes fertility treatments more complex or unsuccessful.

Older parents also face a higher risk of passing away early. This can harm a child's well-being and mental health. Christoffer Buster Reinhardt heads the Health Committee for Danish Regions.
