Denmark Orders Police to Stop Shelving Crime Reports

The Danish government has ordered police to register all potential crimes. Police must end the practice of shelving cases without proper investigation. This means police must now properly handle every crime report you make.

In the past, police sometimes shelved cases to save resources. This practice was commonly known as washing cases. Justice Minister Nicolai Wammen announced the change on Tuesday. He said citizens must trust police across the entire country.

The ministry will implement all recommendations from the National Audit Office. The issue caused major leadership changes in the Danish police force. National Police Commissioner Thorkild Fogde was removed from his post. Other top positions in the police and intelligence service also changed.

The government previously increased funding and training for the police. Wammen noted he remains open to providing additional money if needed. Police leadership must now report regularly on progress to political parties. (Source: CPH POST)
