Danish Prisons Reach Record High Inmate Numbers

Danish prisons face record overcrowding that highlights broader public safety shifts. In June, the inmate population reached 4,642 people. This is a record high for Denmark. The number grew by 400 in just a couple of months.

Recent penal reforms caused this sudden growth in prisoner numbers. The new rules extended prison sentences for violent crimes. Official leaders and prison union representatives warned of severe overcrowding. Staffing shortages are also making the situation worse.
