/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /Denmark may soon ban fast-growing meat chickens called turbo chickens.
Most parties in parliament now support this production ban.
This change could affect chicken options at local supermarkets.
Salling Group stores like Netto, Bilka, and Føtex sell these chickens.
Turbo chickens account for two-thirds of their chicken sales.
The animal welfare group Anima reported these supermarket sales numbers.
Farmers in Denmark raise about 70 million turbo chickens every year.
Newspaper Berlingske published these agricultural production numbers.
The Ross 308 breed is widely used in Danish farming.
These chickens grow from 50 grams to two kilograms quickly.
This growth takes only 33 days to reach full size.
Fast growth puts heavy physical strain on their legs.
Many chickens sit for most of their final weeks.
Several political parties recently joined together to support the ban.
The Moderates changed their position to support national action.
Parliament previously rejected a ban proposal in 2024.
Back then, leaders preferred an agreement across the European Union.
Moderates spokesperson Ellen Emilie Mindegaard-Müllertz spoke to Berlingske.
She said animal welfare rules must protect chickens like pigs.
Social Democrat spokesperson Birgitte Vind also called conditions unacceptable.
A national ban would not stop imports from other countries.
