/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /A majority in the Danish parliament wants to ban turbo chickens. The Minister for Nature and Animal Welfare announced the plan recently. He wants a national ban on these fast-growing birds. This change will directly affect meat production in Denmark.
Turbo chickens grow from 50 grams to two kilos in 33 days. Their legs often cannot support their heavy weight. Many of these birds lose the ability to walk. Denmark produces up to 70 million turbo chickens every year. The Ross 308 breed is the most common type used here.
A recent TV investigation revealed poor farm conditions in northern Jutland. Secret cameras showed chickens receiving only three hours of darkness daily. Danish law requires a minimum of six hours of darkness. Farmers reduce dark hours so the birds eat more food. This practice speeds up growth but hurts animal welfare.
A similar ban failed in parliament back in 2024. The Moderates previously voted against the proposed ban. The party has now changed its official position. Most major Danish political parties now support the new ban. According to The Local, a national ban now has strong political support.
