/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /New Danish citizens could face a five-year provisional period under a new political proposal. If passed, citizenship could be lost if a person commits a serious crime within five years. According to an analysis by The Local Denmark, the ruling Social Democrats have not ruled out supporting the plan.
The proposal comes from Denmark's opposition Liberal party. Under the plan, committing a crime with a prison sentence within five years would remove your citizenship. Anyone who loses citizenship under this rule would be banned from applying again.
The Social Democrats confirmed they are open to the idea. They also favor candidate interviews to screen out anti-democratic views. However, other parties in government oppose the plan. The Social Liberals called the idea completely out of proportion.
Currently, citizenship applications have been paused since February. This pause is due to debates over screening interviews. Over 2,000 applicants are now waiting in limbo. It remains uncertain if existing applicants will face new rules.
