/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /New Danish citizenship could become provisional for five years. The Social Democrats are open to this proposed change.
The opposition Liberal party first suggested the new rule. Under it, new citizens might lose citizenship if they commit a serious crime.
A serious crime means any offense that leads to prison time. People who lose citizenship would never be allowed to apply again.
Liberal leader Troels Lund Poulsen announced the plan on TV 2 news. He said new citizens must follow local laws.
Social Democrat spokesperson Katrine Evelyn Jensen said she is open to the idea. However, the four government parties do not agree on the plan.
Social Liberal spokesperson Magnus Georg Jensen strongly opposes the proposal. He called the plan completely out of proportion.
He noted that only 0.17 percent of new citizens committed serious crimes since 2015. The proposal is not yet submitted to parliament.
It is far from becoming actual Danish law right now. This report was originally published by The Local.
