/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /Buying an electric car in Denmark may soon cost more due to tax changes. Electric vehicles reached a record 88.8 percent of new Danish car sales last month.
According to bilstatistik.dk, drivers registered 20,206 new passenger cars during the month. That is a 13 percent increase from the same period last year. Electric cars made up 97.5 percent of sales when excluding commercial vehicles.
Tesla dominated the Danish market again. The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling car with 1,226 registrations. Tesla Model 3 took second place with 1,073 registrations. Skoda Elroq placed third in overall sales. Toyota bZ4X and Toyota C-HR+ finished in the top five.
Ilyas Dogru from FDM explained Tesla's strategy. Tesla registers imported Model 3 cars at the end of each quarter. Tesla also offered zero-percent financing to buyers. This deal saved customers tens of thousands of Danish kroner.
However, buying costs could rise in the future. Mobility Denmark criticized government plans to raise electric car taxes in 2027. Electric cars currently face taxes when priced above 419,300 Danish kroner. The proposed new tax threshold is 366,200 Danish kroner. Under this plan, a car costing 400,000 Danish kroner faces 25,000 Danish kroner in tax. FDM expects buyers to complete purchases before taxes rise.
