/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /Foreigners applying for Danish citizenship face long and growing delays. Processing now takes more than two years on average. Parliamentary elections recently cancelled scheduled naturalisation bills. The government now plans a new bill for 2027. It will re-examine all pending applications first. This leaves over 2,000 applicants waiting in uncertainty.
Denmark naturalises new citizens through formal parliamentary votes. Parliament presents these bills twice every year. Applicants must meet strict criteria before joining the queue. Requirements include permanent residence and secure employment. Applicants also need clean records and language qualifications. They must pass a Danish knowledge test. Finally, they sign a loyalty declaration.
Recent political events caused major delays for applicants. A planned bill was postponed during Denmark's EU presidency. The prime minister then called elections, dropping the bill entirely. The delay creates serious issues for families with teenagers. Children who turn 18 while waiting must reapply alone. They will face separate adult rules and requirements.
Opposition politicians criticize the current naturalisation system. Left-wing MP Peder Hvelplund calls the delays unreasonable. He says voting on individuals turns applicants into political debate. Meanwhile, the government wants additional screenings for Danish values. The immigration ministry states citizenship is a privilege for loyal residents. (Source: The Local Denmark)
