Digitalization Minister Christina Egelund announced the incident on Monday. Unauthorized parties used a small Danish company's system access to retrieve data. This firm had legal rights to search the national CPR register.
The unauthorized access lasted about ten days in September. Intruders obtained records of 8.8 million individuals. This total exceeds Denmark's population. It includes deceased people and former residents. The exposed data includes names, addresses, and CPR numbers.
An employee detected unusual activity on Friday, October 2. Authorities confirmed the security breach on Saturday. Officials immediately revoked the company's access to the register.
Minister Egelund said security measures were not good enough. She stated warnings should have triggered much faster. The minister declined to identify the firm, citing the ongoing investigation. (Source: CPH Post)
