EU Border Rule Changes Mean Longer Airport Queues for Non-EU Residents

Non-EU passport holders traveling through Stockholm Arlanda Airport face longer passport queues. Temporary EU border flexibility rules officially expired on September 6, 2026.

Border officials cannot pause biometric scans during busy transit periods anymore. All non-EU passport holders must complete full fingerprinting and facial scans. This requirement applies even during severe airport congestion.

Travel and aviation groups warned of unpredictable wait times at busy European transit hubs. Groups like IATA and major carriers urged the European Commission to extend flexibilities. They want flexibilities reinstated through at least March or April 2027. However, the European Commission has not yet responded to these industry requests.

The Entry/Exit System has been mandatory since April 10, 2026. Stockholm travelers returning from non-Schengen destinations should plan for unexpected delays. Extra transit time is essential for first entries and international flight connections.

Meanwhile, the launch of ETIAS travel authorization is moving to 2027. The official EU portal removed its late 2026 launch target window. No replacement launch date has been published by EU authorities yet.

The eu-LISA management board will meet in Dublin on November 17, 2026. Any official decision on launch dates rests solely with the European Commission.
