/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /Job seekers in Sweden have strong legal protection against age discrimination during hiring. A Swedish security firm agreed to pay 50,000 kronor to a 60-year-old applicant after rejecting her over her age.
The incident occurred in November 2025. The woman applied for a marketing manager role at the firm. She was well-qualified for the position. However, she received no initial response and sent a follow-up email.
The hiring manager responded with a discriminatory comment. The manager stated the company wanted someone who was where the applicant had been in 1994.
The woman brought the matter to her trade union, Akademikerförbundet SSR. Union representative Hanna Mikaelsson questioned how her competence could have disappeared since 1994. The union then started formal legal proceedings against the employer.
Right before the case went to court, the company offered a settlement. The woman accepted the payout of 50,000 kronor. This story was originally reported by union magazine Kollega and news outlet The Local.
