/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /Sweden has launched four autonomous drone ships in the Baltic Sea from Nynäshamn in Stockholm County.
These uncrewed vessels will track ships and guard key undersea infrastructure.
For residents in Greater Stockholm, this deployment strengthens regional security across vital maritime routes.
The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration detailed the launch on October 22, 2026.
Saildrone announced the global deployment on October 26, 2026.
The Navy is buying surveillance as a service rather than purchasing the boats.
Saildrone operates and maintains the four 10-meter Saildrone Voyager vessels.
The Swedish Navy assigns daily missions and receives continuous sensor data.
Each vessel will operate for 360 days, providing total continuous coverage.
The drones carry radar, cameras, Starlink communications, and automatic identification systems.
They compare visual contacts with reported ship positions to spot suspicious behavior.
About 4,500 ships cross the Baltic Sea every single day.
Commander Paula Wallenburg confirmed the drones already provide valuable intelligence.
They free crewed warships for complex missions requiring human judgement.
This deployment is the first under the Nordic Defence Cooperation framework.
Other Nordic countries can join the contract to expand regional surveillance.
The mission strengthens NATO's northern flank following Sweden's accession in March 2024.
It supports ongoing efforts to secure energy and communication cables on the seabed.
