Passengers Avert Motorway Disaster in Sweden After Bus Driver Faints

The incident happened on August 17th near Jönköping in southern Sweden.
Around 50 passengers were traveling on the motorway bus.
The vehicle was moving at about 70 kilometres per hour.
The driver lost consciousness with his foot on the gas pedal.
Indian engineer Niranjan Nithyanandam and passenger Maria Hjelte took quick action.
Nithyanandam ran forward after hearing another passenger scream for help.
He tried to reach the brake pedal on the floor.
The driver's large body blocked access to the brake.
The bus crashed through the median divider into oncoming lanes.
Nithyanandam feared a deadly collision with approaching cars.
Hjelte grabbed the steering wheel to guide the bus.
They intentionally steered against the divider to slow the vehicle down.
The driver slowly woke up as the bus came to a halt.
He pressed the brake fully and opened the bus doors.
All passengers evacuated the bus safely without injuries.
Police spokesperson Mats Pettersson praised the bravery of the passengers.
He noted that many children were inside the vehicle.
Nithyanandam does not even hold a driving licence.
