US, Denmark, and Greenland Sign New Arctic Defense Deal

The United States, Denmark, and Greenland reached a new Arctic security agreement. This deal grants the US military broader access to Greenland. It also shapes long-term defense planning in the Nordic region. Brussels Signal reported on the accord.

US President Donald Trump announced the deal on September 18. He stated that the agreement gives Washington permanent control over Greenland's security. He added that US adversaries cannot operate bases there without written approval. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the pact addresses national security concerns.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen offered a different perspective on the agreement. She emphasized that the deal respects Danish sovereignty. She noted that it honors the self-determination rights of the Greenlandic people. Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the agreement strengthens local security.

Frederiksen and Nielsen traveled to New York on September 20 to sign the deal. The agreement still requires approval from the Danish and Greenlandic parliaments. Meanwhile, the European Commission recently announced a 200 million euro partnership package for Greenland. Denmark also boosted its Arctic defense spending by 2.1 billion US dollars.
