/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /Chinese residents in the Nordics may face longer visa wait times for visiting family. Schengen visa applications from China grew by double digits in early 2026. Data from technology service provider VFS Global shows strong travel demand to Europe. Yicai Global reported these figures on September 1.
Nordic destinations experienced solid application growth. Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland saw rising interest from Chinese travelers. Italy and Germany remained the top European choices. Applications for those two countries surged during the summer peak.
Overseas study, family visits, business, and vacations drove the travel rebound. The 2026 FIFA World Cup also boosted interest in European travel. Inquiries for Norway rose after strong performances by footballer Erling Haaland.
Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou led China in visa application volume. Hangzhou and Chengdu saw growth due to expanded direct flight routes. Elderly travelers made up more than one-third of all applicants. Older tourists focused on cultural tours, cruises, and historical sightseeing.
VFS Global warned that appointment slots for popular destinations are hard to get. High demand will continue through National Day, Christmas, and New Year holidays. Applicants should arrange their travel plans early.
