/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /Denmark's outdoor recreation is seeing real results from river restoration efforts. Anglers caught a record 1,400 large trout in the Varde River during 2025. Science news outlet Videnskab.dk reported the historic fishing numbers.
Researchers from DTU Aqua also found trout fry across the river system. Fry numbers reached a 40-year high at these surveyed locations. Bjarke Ibsen Dehli is a fish conservation adviser at DTU Aqua. He said efforts to remove physical obstacles in Varde River are working. However, he noted Denmark is still behind in restoring natural waterways.
Historically, Danish rivers were straightened and deepened for farming. Workers removed gravel and stones needed by spawning fish. They also cleared aquatic plants that offered hiding places. Dams, sluices, and bridges blocked migrating trout and salmon. Fish trapped near barriers were eaten by birds and mammals.
DTU Aqua found healthy trout populations along 14 percent of the river. This is an increase from five percent recorded in 2016. Local associations can apply to DTU Aqua for river restoration grants. Dehli encouraged residents to join local groups working on local streams.
