/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /The Danish police watchdog is investigating Copenhagen Police after recent protest incidents. An independent body opened a case into officers hitting press photographers with batons.
The incidents occurred on Saturday during central Copenhagen demonstrations about remigration. Photographers from Danish newspapers Politiken and Ekstra Bladet were involved in separate events.
Politiken reported its photographer was struck several times by police officers. His camera was smashed, and he received emergency room treatment. An Ekstra Bladet photographer was struck on the arm while holding visible credentials.
Copenhagen Police sent the cases to the independent authority known as DUP. Police stated they do not wish to hinder press work. Both newspaper editors strongly condemned the actions as unacceptable attacks on press freedom.
Danish journalist unions have now requested a meeting with the national police commissioner. They want clear explanations on how police will protect journalists during future demonstrations.
