The People's Bank of China released an official statement on Thursday. It reaffirmed its managed floating exchange rate regime. The exchange rate depends on market supply and currency baskets.
The central bank rejected claims of intentional currency devaluation. China has no need to devalue the yuan for trade advantages. Exchange rate movements depend on economic growth and monetary policy. Geopolitics and market shocks also drive these currency dynamics.
Qu Qiang from the Belt and Road Research Center spoke to CGTN. He attributed recent RMB appreciation to natural market forces. The central bank only intervenes during market panic or vicious spirals.
PBOC Deputy Governor Lu Lei previously commented on the exchange rate policy. He noted that market forces play the decisive role in rate dynamics.
