Online Registration Rules Change for Foreign Passport Holders Visiting China

Visiting China with a foreign passport just became easier. Travellers can now register their accommodation online within 24 hours of arrival. This official change applies across China starting September 21, 2026. It removes the need to visit local police stations in person. This helps overseas residents staying in private homes avoid fines up to 2,000 RMB.

China's National Immigration Administration officially launched this nationwide online service. Foreign nationals and naturalized citizens staying outside hotels can use the digital system. This includes people staying in private residences, homestays, or short-term rentals. Users can register via the official NIA 12367 platform or app. The service is also available through WeChat and Alipay mini-programs.
