New EU Law Proposal Could Limit Social Media Access for Children

European families could soon face strict new social media limits for children.

The European Union presented a draft law called the EU KIDS Act on Thursday.

Under the proposal, children under 13 cannot use social media.

Teens aged 13 and 14 would only get mini accounts linked to parents.

Parental accounts would cap daily screen time at one hour.

Youths aged 15 and older could create independent accounts.

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen announced the draft plan.

The rule forces tech companies to prove their platforms are safe first.

It targets social media, online games, and artificial intelligence chatbots.

Profiles for minors must remain private by default.

App features like location, camera, and microphone must stay off.

Chatbots must not build emotional dependencies with young users.

The proposal must now pass through negotiations with member states and parliament.

This legislative process may take several months to complete.

Companies breaking the rules could face fines up to six percent of global turnover.

Once passed, the law will apply across Denmark, Sweden, and all EU states.

The EU is also testing an age verification tool that protects privacy.
