Massive Viking Silver Hoard Found in Danish Garden

History enthusiasts in Denmark can soon see a massive Viking silver treasure.

A homeowner in Rebild discovered Denmark's largest Viking-Age silver hoard in his garden.

He found the collection while digging a new terrace.

The 10th-century collection weighs almost 18.5 kilograms.

It contains 700 items.

The treasure was hidden inside an old clay vessel.

It includes silver bars, bracelets, and a small Thor's hammer pendant.

It also includes 47 whole silver coins and cut silver pieces.

One silver bar has runic letters that may read hutu.

Some coins feature Arabic writing.

This hoard is three times larger than the famous Terslev Hoard.

The North Jutland Museum called the discovery exceptionally important.

Torben Sarauw is the head of cultural heritage at the museum.

He said silver was used for trade and storing wealth.

The hoard was buried when the Danish kingdom was taking shape.

Christianity was also spreading across Scandinavia at that time.

The museum plans to exhibit the treasure at Fyrkat.

Fyrkat is a Viking ring fortress and Unesco World Heritage site.
