/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /International students in Denmark face tough job hurdles after graduation. Academic success does not easily lead to professional careers. Local experience often matters more than academic degrees to local employers. A recent report highlights this challenge for foreign graduates.
Roskilde University master's student Shampa Koly wrote about this issue. She shared her view in the CPH Post. Many foreign students take jobs outside their fields to survive. They work in restaurants, warehouses, cleaning, or food delivery. Danish companies want applicants with local work experience. Yet foreign students cannot get local experience without a job. This creates a difficult situation for many educated foreign workers.
Data from the Ministry of Higher Education and Science shows clear trends. About 78 percent of Bangladeshi master's students had student jobs. Among those working, 88 percent worked in service or transport sectors. Nine months after graduation, 53 percent were employed in Denmark. It is unclear if these jobs matched their degree studies. Denmark granted 4,366 student residence permits to Bangladeshi nationals from 2021 to 2025.
Universities can help by offering mentorships and company internships. Students should also learn Danish early and attend local events. Building local networks is vital for long-term career growth in Denmark.
