/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /People traveling from Denmark or Sweden into Germany must prepare for continued border checks. Germany has extended controls at all nine land borders until mid-March 2027.
The German Federal Interior Ministry notified the European Commission of the extension. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt submitted the plan. Checks apply to road, rail, and bus travel into Germany.
For residents in Copenhagen, southbound travel often goes through Germany. Travelers should carry original valid passports and residence permits. Delays may happen at land crossings.
Germany first introduced controls at all land borders in September 2024. Former Interior Minister Nancy Faeser started the measures. Officials have extended them three times since then.
In June, the European Commission urged countries to phase out internal controls. EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner pointed to new border management technology. The EU Entry/Exit System became operational in April 2026.
Luxembourg Foreign Minister Léon Gloden called for Germany to stop checks immediately. However, Dobrindt defended the checks by citing migration pressure in Ceuta. German media outlet The Local reported the decision.
