/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /The European Union wants China to limit hybrid car sales in Europe. Chinese hybrid imports may face high tariffs if Beijing refuses. This decision could affect car prices and local jobs in the Nordics.
Brussels asked Beijing to cap hybrid sales at 15 percent market share. Chinese brands currently hold over one third of European hybrid sales. Hybrid sales grew from 3,800 in October 2024 to 50,000 in July 2026.
In October 2024, the EU added 45 percent tariffs to Chinese electric cars. However, hybrid cars were only taxed at 10 percent. Chinese hybrid sales grew rapidly after that policy took effect.
EU leaders say the current trade gap with China is unsustainable. European carmakers face heavy pressure and rising operational costs. For example, Volkswagen plans to cut 100,000 jobs by 2030.
Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič travels to Beijing in October for talks. China calls the European demands protectionist. However, major Chinese carmakers agreed to follow new export guidelines.
