EU Considers Border System Delay to Relieve Airport Queues

The EU may delay strict enforcement of its new digital border system. This move could ease expected airport queues for international travelers.

The new border controls are known as the Entry/Exit System, or EES. The system requires biometric registration for non-EU visitors entering the Schengen Area. EU officials originally planned full enforcement for September 6.

Peak summer travel created severe airport bottlenecks across European countries. Travelers faced long queues and frequent technical glitches at border controls. Transport operators called for swift adjustments to avoid ongoing transit delays. Authorities in Brussels are now evaluating temporary relaxations for border staff. The proposed adjustments include extended grace periods for mandatory border checks.

Holders of Danish or Swedish residence permits are exempt from EES registration. However, non-EU visitors on short-stay visas must still register their biometrics. Relatives and tourists visiting from China must complete registration upon their arrival. All international passengers may still experience airport queue congestion during travel. EU leaders will decide on the temporary measures in the coming weeks.
