EU Asks China to Curb Hybrid Vehicle Exports

The EU wants imports capped at about 15 percent of its market. The bloc warned it may raise tariffs if China does not comply. The proposal was reported by the Financial Times.
EU imports of Chinese hybrids grew fast. Imports rose from 3,800 in October 2024 to 50,000 in July 2026.
The EU placed tariffs of up to 45 percent on pure electric cars in October 2024. Hybrids currently face a 10 percent tariff.
European leaders say the trade deficit with China has reached a tipping point. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the daily deficit is about 1 billion euros.
