Drivers Face Month-Long Delays on Vejlefjord Bridge

Drivers using Denmark's Vejlefjord Bridge face daily traffic delays for about one month. The Danish Road Directorate is replacing two expansion joints on the bridge. Preparation work starts during the final two weeks of September. Main repairs will run from early October until early November. Work will continue seven days a week.

The repair work affects two expansion joints in the southbound lanes. Expansion joints allow the bridge to expand and contract with temperature changes. These joints caused repeated problems and emergency repairs in recent years. The agency expects these repairs to prevent future emergency roadworks.

Almost 100,000 vehicles cross the nearly 50-year-old bridge every day. Project manager Allan Højgaard Madsen warned about inevitable traffic queues. Closing lanes leaves drivers with only one lane in each direction. Queues will build in both directions every evening from about 7 p.m. Morning and afternoon rush-hour traffic will see delays mainly southbound.
