/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /You can now fly direct from Copenhagen to Ilulissat in western Greenland. The new route takes about four hours and 40 minutes. Travelers no longer need to change planes in Nuuk.
Danish aviation authorities approved the expanded airport on Thursday. They granted final safety approval after test flights and safety inspections. Lars Korsholm said the airport meets all modern international safety standards. He serves as deputy director at the authority.
Workers extended the airport runway from 845 meters to 2,200 meters. The longer runway allows larger planes to land near Disko Bay. Air Greenland will run one direct flight every Wednesday. They will add more weekly flights during busy holiday periods.
The project is part of a multibillion-krone investment in Greenland aviation. Authorities have also upgraded the airport in Nuuk. They are building a new airport near Qaqortoq in southern Greenland. This expansion aims to boost tourism and economic connections. According to CPH Post, temporary flight restrictions will gradually ease over time.
