Denmark Raises Salary Floor for Foreign Workers Under Pay Limit Scheme

Non-EU professionals planning to work in Denmark face higher salary rules in 2026. The Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration updated its rules. The minimum annual pay under the Pay Limit Scheme rises to 552,000 Danish kroner. That equals 46,000 Danish kroner per month. The new threshold applies to applications submitted from January 1, 2026.

This change represents an increase of 38,000 Danish kroner from 2025. The Pay Limit Scheme offers work permits based on income level. Applicants do not need specific degrees or restricted job titles. They only need a qualifying job offer meeting the wage standard. A separate supplementary scheme sets a lower threshold of 446,000 Danish kroner.

The agency limits what counts toward the minimum salary calculation. Qualifying compensation includes guaranteed cash pay and standard pension contributions. Paid holiday allowance also counts toward the total requirement. However, perks like company cars and phone allowances are excluded. Canteen benefits and employer-paid housing do not count either.

Permits remain tied directly to specific employment contracts. If employment ends, workers receive a six-month period to search for work. However, they cannot work during those six months. Any new job requires a completely fresh work permit application. (Source: Nairametrics)
