Denmark Plans Non-EU Deportation Centres for Undocumented Immigrants

Denmark plans to send undocumented immigrants to deportation centres outside the EU. This move targets migrants living in Denmark without legal permits. Migration Minister Morten Bødskov announced the plan in a press statement. He expects the first deportations to partner countries before late 2027.

The statement came before a Friday meeting with five European nations. Ministers from Denmark, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and Greece discussed the framework. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen also joined the meeting. The goal is to establish departure centres in countries outside the EU.

Bødskov said Denmark is closer than ever to reaching this goal. The government wants to stop migrants from staying in Denmark illegally. Bødskov noted that illegal migrants should not benefit from difficult deportation processes. Officials also hope to deter people smugglers through these non-EU centres.

The European Parliament approved new rules allowing third-country centres in June. Previous attempts by Denmark to open outside centres were unsuccessful.
