/ DANGDI / DANGDI / DANGDI /People in Denmark can now get emergency mental health care by calling 112. They can also contact their local regional emergency doctor. The new nationwide psychiatric hotline launched on Monday. This system connects callers directly to mental health specialists. It covers both physical and mental health emergencies across the country.
Danish politicians first agreed on the scheme in 2023. The agreement was part of a broader deal on psychiatric care. It took until now to roll out the service nationwide. Nurses and social care workers staff the new emergency function. They all have psychiatric experience and work with regional specialists.
Callers facing mental health crises will get quick referrals to consultants. Ambulances can still pick up patients who need hospital care. Paramedics will treat patients before taking them to emergency evaluation. The service aims to provide help before conditions become severe. It hopes to reduce the need for long hospital stays.
The initiative follows a fatal shooting at Field's shopping centre in 2022. A man with a history of psychiatric treatment killed three people. The tragedy sparked debate about mental health services in Denmark. National mental health association spokesperson Mia Kristina Hansen backed the initiative. Health Minister Ida Auken called the scheme a historic improvement. Official authorities will monitor the service closely for evaluation. This report was published by The Local.
