Denmark hosts annual citizenship day at Christiansborg Palace

The Danish parliament will host its annual citizenship day on Sunday, September 6th. Anyone who obtained Danish citizenship in 2025 is invited to Christiansborg Palace. The event gives new citizens a chance to meet local politicians directly. The Local reports that parliament expects about 2,000 people to attend.

Folketinget has held this celebration every year since 2006. The event shows that Denmark has a very flat social hierarchy. It promotes easy communication between politicians and the public. Celebrations begin at 1pm with a speech by Parliament Speaker Søren Gade.

The opening program includes a folk dance performance called Folk dance for the future. Faroese pop singer Sissal will also perform at the event. She represented Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2025. The a cappella choir Vocal Line will also sing for guests. The stage event ends with fællessang, the Danish tradition of group singing.

At 2pm, doors to the parliament building open for all attendees. New citizens can tour the historical rooms inside Christiansborg Palace. They can also talk directly with representatives from various political parties. According to The Local, this annual event commemorates an important milestone for new Danes.
